The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound (also known as Save Our Sound) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the long-term preservation of Nantucket Sound, the historic body of water that lies between Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. It was formed as a grassroots organization in 2002 in response to Cape Wind's proposal to build an industrial wind project in the Sound.
Cape Wind is a private developer seeking to build a 25-square-mile wind power plant in public waters between mainland Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket - just outside of the Massachusetts Ocean Sanctuary established in 1971.
Our goal is to protect Nantucket Sound in perpetuity through conservation, environmental action, and opposition to inappropriate industrial or commercial development. The Alliance supports formal designation of Nantucket Sound as a marine protected area.
Despite strong political and media support for Cape Wind at state and federal levels, the Alliance and the local community have to date fulfilled their mission.
