Press Release - Statement on MA House and Senate Energy Bill

August 1, 2016

Statement of Audra Parker, President and CEO of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound

The Alliance congratulates the Massachusetts House and Senate for passing an energy bill that supports only those offshore wind projects sited in locations where fishing, navigation, cultural, and environmental conflicts are minimized and where development rights were secured through competitive bidding.  While the energy bill calls for Massachusetts utilities to buy up to 1600 megawatts of offshore wind energy, it precludes projects in near-shore locations within 10 miles of an inhabited area.

Although passage of the bill is another major setback for Cape Wind, the developer continues to hold a long-term lease to 46 square miles of the Sound, which is valid until the year 2041.  A recent U.S. Court of Appeals decision vacated key environmental studies underlying the lease, requiring significant additional environmental review, but fell short of terminating the lease.
